The Trustees of the late Lord Rolle are now lords of the manor, owners of most of the soil, impropriators of the great tithes, and patrons of the perpetual curacy, valued at £96, and now held by the Rev. P.D. Foulkes, of Shebbear. The Church (St. James,) is a small fabric, with three bells. . . ." [From White's Devonshire Directory (1850)]
