ABBOTS BICKINGTON

"ABBOTS-BICKINGTON a small parish, 9 miles S.W. of Torrington, has only 75 souls, and 1034 acres of land, formerly belonging to Hartland Abbey. The Trustees of the late Lord Rolle are now lords of the manor, owners of most of the soil, impropriators of the great tithes, and patrons of the perpetual curacy, valued at £96, and now held by the Rev. P.D. Foulkes, of Shebbear. The Church (St. James,) is a small fabric, with three bells. . . ." [From White's Devonshire Directory (1850)]
