ABBOTSHAM

"ABBOTSHAM, a parish in the hundred of Shebbear, in the county of Devon, 2 miles W. of Bideford railway station, on Barnstaple bay. It contains the hamlets of Shepperton and Littleham, and it anciently belonged to Tavistock Abbey. The church is dedicated to St. Helen. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Exeter, value £159, in the patronage of the Lord Chancellor. In the neighbourhood is Kenwie or "Cynvit" Castle, from which the Earl of Devon sallied and defeated the Danes under their chieftain Hubba, when he took the banner of the sacred raven."
