ASHFORD

[Description(s) from The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland (1868)]

"ASHFORD, a parish in the hundred of Braunton, in the county of Devon, 2 miles to the N.W. of Barnstaple, its post-town. It is bounded on the S. by the navigable river Taw (Torr). The living is a rectory in the diocese of Exeter, value £110, in the patronage of the lord chancellor. The church, dedicated to St. Peter, is a new stone building in the early decorated Gothic style of architecture, with a tower and spire, and was rebuilt in 1854 at a cost of £500. The Baptists have a chapel and there is a national school. Ashford House is the principal residence."
