ASHWATER

[Description(s) from The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland (1868)]

"ASHWATER, a parish in the hundred of Black Torrington, in the county of Devon, 6 miles to the S.E. of Holsworthy, its post town. It is watered by the river Carey. There are quarries of good freestone in the neighbourhood. The living is a rectory* in the diocese of Exeter, value £569, in the gift of the Rev. T. Melhuish, the incumbent. The church, which contains several interesting monuments of the Careys, and a square font, is dedicated to St. Peter. Fairs are held here on the first Tuesday in May, and the first Monday after the 1st August."
