"BRAMPFORD-SPEKE, a parish in the hundred of Wonford, in the county of Devon, 4 miles to the N. of Exeter, its post town. It is situated on the E. side of the river Exe, and is crossed by the Bristol and Exeter railway. The living is a vicarage* in the diocese of Exeter, of the value of £216, in the patronage of the lord chancellor. The church is dedicated to St. Peter. The parochial charities, consisting of the parish lands, are worth about £15 a year. In 1849 the Rev. George Gorham was presented to the vicarage of Brampford-Speke, and the famous "Gorham Case," in the Ecclesiastical Courts, grew out of the opposition of the Bishop of Exeter to that presentation, on the ground of the theological opinions of Mr. Gorham."
