"BRENT-TOR, a parish in the hundred of Tavistock, in the county of Devon, 4 miles to the N. of Tavistock, its post town. It is situated in a rugged country on the small river Lid, at the foot of a lofty craggy rock, which has given name to the parish. The Tor rises to a considerable height from the elevated down, and is a conspicuous object at a great distance. It commands an extensive view, and in clear weather it is said to be visible both from the English and the Bristol Channels. Manganese is obtained in this parish. The living is a perpetual curacy in the diocese of Exeter, value £60, in the patronage of the Duke of Bedford. The church stands near the summit of the Tor, and is very difficult of approach. It forms a landmark for vessels entering the harbour of Plymouth, and is said to have been founded as a monument of gratitude by a merchant who had escaped from shipwreck. It is dedicated to St. Michael."
