BRIDESTOW

[Description(s) from The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland (1868)]

"BRIDESTOW, a parish in the hundred of Lifton, in the county of Devon, 6 miles to the S.W. of Okehampton. Crediton is its post town. It is watered by a small stream called the Thistle Brook, a branch of the river Lyd. The living is a rectory* in the diocese of Exeter, of the value with the perpetual curacy of Sourton annexed, of £424, in the patronage of the bishop. The church, which is partly in the Norman style, is dedicated to St. Bridget. The parish has the benefit of some charitable endowments worth about £6 a year. Leawood House is the principal Feat. Cattle fairs are held in the village on the first Wednesday in June and the 29th July."
