BUCKLAND-FILLEIGH

"BUCKLAND-FILLEIGH, a parish in the hundred of Shebbear, in the county of Devon, 7 miles to the S. of Torrington. Hatherleigh is its post town. It lies near the river Torridge. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Exeter, value £218, in the patronage of the bishop. The church, dedicated to St. Mary, is a small ancient edifice, entirely covered with ivy. It has the mausoleum and several ancient monuments of the Fortescue family. There are some charities of trifling value. Buckland-Filleigh House, formerly the seat of the Filleighs, now of the Fortescues, is a handsome mansion of stone, situated on rising ground in a picturesque and well wooded demesne."
