This is the last will and testament
of me Stephen Hewett, late of Holcombe Rogus and now of Burlescombe
in the county of Devon, Yeoman. Made the third day of March in the
year of our lord one thousand eight hundred and fifteen. I give,
devise and bequeath all my freehold and leasehold messuages and
lands situate in the several parishes of Burlescombe, Holcombe
Rogus and Culmstock or elsewhere unto my two sons John Hewett and
James Hewett their heirs, executors, admons [sic] and assigns
during the natural life of my wife Sarah Hewett, upon trust only
for her, and to apply the rents, issues and profits thereof to and
for her use and benefit, keeping the several premises in good
repair and taking timber for such repairs only. Also I give and
devise all that my leasehold messuages and farm called Town
Tenement situate in Burlescombe aforesaid with the lands and
appurts [sic] thereto belonging, after my wife's decease, unto my
son John Hewett, his executors, admons [sic] and assigns for ever,
during all my estate and interest therein. Also, after my wife's
decease, I give and devise all that my leasehold overland and close
of ground situate within, and parcel of, the Manor of Culmstock in
the said county with the appurts [sic] unto and equally to be
divided between my two daughters Elizabeth Coram and Mary Loye,
share and share alike as tenants in common and to their respective
executors, admons and assigns, during all my estate and interest
therein. Also I give and devise all that my freehold messuage and
farm commonly known by the name of Wippalls situate in Holcombe
Rogus aforesaid with the lands and appurtenances thereto belonging,
unto and to the use of my son James Hewett, his heirs and assigns
for ever, subject to the aforesaid estate therein for the term of
the natural life of my said wife and also subject to the payment of
the five several legacies next hereinafter mentioned at the end of
six months next after the death of my said wife, that is to say, to
my son John Hewett one hundred pounds, to my daughter Sarah Merson
two hundred pounds, to my daughter Grace Torr two hundred pounds,
to my daughter Elizabeth Coram one hundred pounds and to my
daughter Mary Loye one hundred pounds and also subject to the
payment of twenty pounds apiece to my two grandsons Stephen Hewett
Coram and Stephen How Loye at their several ages of twenty one
years. All which seven several legacies or sums of money I charge
upon my said freehold messuage, farm and lands in Holcombe Rogus
aforesaid and expressly declare that my personal estate shall not
be liable to the payment of any part thereof. Also I give and
bequeath to my son John Hewett the sum of two hundred pounds, to my
daughter Sarah Merson the sum of two hundred pounds, to my daughter
Elizabeth Coram the sum of two hundred pounds, to my son James
Hewett the sum of two hundred pounds, to my daughter Grace Torr the
sum of two hundred pounds and to my daughter Mary Loye the sum of
two hundred pounds to be paid out of my personal estate in one year
after my decease, all the residue and remainder of my money,
securities for money, goods, chattels and personal estate
whatsoever subject to my debts, if any, and funeral and
testamentary expenses, I give and bequeath to my said two sons John
Hewett and James Hewett upon trust for the further support,
maintenance and benefit of my said wife during her life, and after
her decease as to all my said residuary personal estate and all
interest, rents, profits and accumulations thereof and of my
aforesaid freehold and leasehold estates or so much thereof as
shall not have been paid or applied to or for the benefit of my
said wife in her life time, upon trust to pay thereout in one year
next after her decease the several legacies following, that is to
say to my four daughters Sarah Merson, Elizabeth Coram, Grace Torr
and Mary Loye the sum of one hundred pounds apiece and to my Grand
daughter Grace Wilcocks the sum of twenty pounds, retaining the
residue and surplus thereof to themselves my said two sons to whom
I give the same equally to be divided between them, subject
nevertheless to the funeral expenses of my said wife, and I make
and appoint my said two sons John Hewett and James Hewett joint
executors of this my last will and testament, hereby revoking all
former wills and testamentary dispositions by me made in writing,
whereof I have to this my last will and testament written upon and
contained in two sheets of paper to the first sheet thereof set my
hand and to the last my hand and seal the day and year first above

the testator, as and for, and to be his last will and testament in
the presence of us who have subscribed our names as witnesses
hereto at his request, in his presence and in the presence of each
other.
