CHAGFORD

"CHAGFORD, a parish and stannary town in the hundred of Wonford, in the county of Devon, 15 miles S.W. of Exeter, its post town, and 4 from the Moreton station of the London and South-Western railway. It is situated in a pretty spot on the river Teign, and surrounded with most romantic scenery. There are two good hotels besides lodging-houses, for the accommodation of visitors who resort to the village in the summer months for the benefit of the bracing air. The market-place, recently built, forms part of the revenues of the church. The tin-mines are no longer worked. The living is a rectory* in the diocese of Exeter, value £650, in the patronage of the Rev. G. H. Haines. The church, dedicated to St. Michael, is a handsome stone edifice in the early perpendicular style. The Bible Christians and Wesleyans have places of worship, and there are schools for both sexes. The charities produce about £21 per annum. The lords of the manor are Nicholas Clampett and J. Coniam, Esqrs. The market is on Saturday. Fairs are held on the last Thursday in March, September, and October, and the first Thursday in May."
