CHALLACOMBE

[Description(s) from The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland (1868)]

"CHALLACOMBE, a parish in the hundred of Sherwill, in the county of Devon, 10 miles N.E. of the Barnstaple railway station. Linton is its post town. The river Bray runs through this parish. The living is a rectory* in the diocese of Exeter, value £200, in the patronage of Earl Fortescue, who is lord of the manor. The church, dedicated to the Holy Trinity, is a modern edifice in the Gothic style, with an ancient tower. The charities amount to £3 per annum. The tithes were commuted in 1839."
