CHAWLEIGH

"CHAWLEIGH, (or Chawley), a parish in the hundred of North Tawton, in the county of Devon, 2 miles S.E. of Chulmleigh, its post town. It is situated on the river Dart, not far from the London and South-Western railway, which has a station at Eggesford. The living is a rectory* in the diocese of, Exeter, value £455, in the patronage of the Earl of Portsmouth. The church, dedicated to St. James, is an ancient edifice in the early English style. The Independents and Bible Christians have places of worship, and there is a school for both sexes. The charities amount to about £100 per annum. The Earl of Portsmouth is the lord of the manor. Fairs are held on: the 6th May, and the Tuesday before the last Thursday in October.
