Contents & SearchCHELDON, a small village and parish,in the valley of the Little Dart river 3½ miles E by S. of Chulmleigh,contains 90 inhabitants,and 1099 acres of land, nearly all the property of the Hon. Newton Fellowes the lord of the manor and patron of the rectory, valued in KB at £4. 18s.6½d. and in 1831 at £120. The Rev.R.S. Bryan is the incumbent and has 36A. 3R. 6P. of glebe, and a good residence. The tithes were commuted in 1841 for £77 per annum. The Church {St. Mary,} is a small structure, with a tower and three bells In the interior are two ornamental iron screens, dated 1737 and 1747. The Church House is occupied by poor people, and its garden is let for 10 shillings, which is distributed with the interest of £50 given by various donor.
