CHELDON

[Description(s) from The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland (1868)]

"CHELDON, a parish in the hundred of Witheridge, in the county of Devon, 8 miles S. of South Molton, 5 miles N.E. of Eggesford railway station, and 3 N.E. of Chulmleigh, its post town. It is situated on the river Dart. The living is a rectory* in the diocese of Exeter, value £97, in the patronage of the Earl of Portsmouth. The church, dedicated to St. Mary, is a stone edifice in the Norman style of architecture. The charities amount to £3 per annum. The Earl of Portsmouth is lord of the manor."
