CHURCH STANTON

"CHURCH STANTON, (or Church Staunton), a parish in the hundred of Hemyock, in the county of Devon, 7 miles S. of Taunton, and 10 N.E. of Honiton, its post town. It is situated under the Black Down hills on the borders of Somersetshire, and contains the hamlets of Redlane, Churchingford, Stapley, and Burnworthy. The Bristol and Exeter section of the Great Western railway passes within a few miles of the village, and has a station at Wellington. The living is a rectory* in the diocese of Exeter, value £421, in the patronage of the Rev. H. Edwards, Jun. The church, dedicated to St. Peter, is a beautiful structure in the perpendicular style, and possesses some oak carving and stained-glass windows. The Wesleyans and Baptists have places of worship, and there is a school supported by the rector. The annual produce of the charities amounts to £5. Fairs are held at Churchingford on the 25th and 26th January and the last Friday in April. Messrs. Bush are lords of the manor.

"CHURCHENFORD, a hamlet in the parish of Church Stanton, in the county of Devon, 9 miles S. of the Taunton railway station. The Baptists have a chapel and schools. Royston House is a fine building, delightfully situated, and near it are remains of an ancient church. Cattle fairs are held en the 25th and 26th January, and on the last Friday in April."
