"CLIST ST. MARY, a parish in the hundred of East Budleigh, in the county of Devon, 4 miles S.E. of Exeter, and 1 from Topsham, its post town. It is situated on the river Clyst. The living is a rectory* in the diocese of Exeter, value £190, in the patronage of the Rev. E. Strong. The church, dedicated to St. Mary, is an old building with tower. There are National schools for both sexes, and the charities are of the value of £8 per annum. It was at this place that Lord Russell defeated the insurgents under Arundell in 1549."
