This volume contains a detailed listing of over 60 maps and surveys, 24 full page illustrations of maps, abstracts of three substantial surveys of Acland properties in Devon, Somerset and Cornwall, and an abstract of correspondence between the Aclands and Alexander Law, one of the principal surveyors used by the family. The work provides an extension of the study by the same editors in their Devon Maps and map-makers: manuscript maps before 1840 as it shows the commissioning of maps by one family in a wider area than just Devon and expands our knowledge of a patron's relationship with those who drew the maps and executed the surveys for them. There is a substantial Introduction and an Index of personal names and of parishes occurring in the text. The volume will prove an invaluable source for family and local historians in the three counties as well as those interested in the history of agriculture and of the landscape.
