Many people say that you either love Dartmoor or loathe it. Miss Sophie Dixon obviously loved it and was very moved by it. She is perhaps best known for her 1886 poem, Castalian Hours that extols the wildness and solitude of Longaford Tor on Dartmoor, and its surrounding moorland tract. An extract from her poem received recognition from William Crossing in his classic 1888 Dartmoor travelogue 'Amidst Devonia's Alps'. Dixon's small journal of her excursions across the Moor is typical of the late Georgian, early Victorian literature produced generally by those of the leisured classes as food for the developing Westcountry tourism industry. This rare and much sought-after book was produced digitally from a copy held in the Bodleian Library collection that can be downloaded from http://books.google.co.uk/books, with a search by either author or title. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
