George Philip Rigney Pulman, (1819-1880) was a reasonably prolific writer of books, of a type called 'vade mecum', (from Latin, literally: go with me), handbooks for the Westcountry's rapidly developing tourism industry. This handsomely bound book of 'sketches' is a compendium of articles that appeared periodically in the Exeter-based Devon Weekly Times. Its original purchase price was one shilling. Pulman's nomme de plume, 'Tickler' probably alludes to the old Devonshire countryman's skill of trout 'tickling'. This rare and much sought-after book was produced digitally from a copy held in the Bodleian Library collection that can be downloaded from http://books.google.co.uk/books, with a search by either author or title. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
