THE DEVONSHIRE ASSOCIATION

for the Advancement of Science, Literature and the Arts

(Founded 1862)

You are invited to share in the distinctive qualities of Devon and its people and to contribute to its future

Registered Charity No. 252468

The Devonshire Association is unique among county organisations for the breadth of its interests. It was founded in the great age of Victorian optimism when so much was being discovered and explored for the first time.

The Association, though the oldest county body, has a modern role to play, bridging the specialist divides between the arts and sciences and presenting a rounded view of the county and all activities within it, past, present and future. Above all it provides opportunities for involvement by the individual through its well developed system of Branches and Sections. Its Annual Meeting, held in a different part of Devon each year, provides a marvellous occasion for members to experience the county and to learn from the people of each place and from specialists.

It is a warm and friendly body, appealing to all ages.

Membership of the Association opens the door to all this:

BRANCHES: wherever you live in the county there is a Branch near you, with a full programme of talks and excursions throughout the year. You will probably wish to join your nearest Branch but as a member you may attend the meetings of all Branches (subject to space).

SECTIONS: you may also join specialist Sections, again at no extra cost. Currently there are Sections on Botany, Buildings, Entomology, Folklore, Geology, History and Literature. The Sections focus on particular subjects and make annual reports, as well as holding talks and field meetings throughout the year. Among recent Section publications are the Atlas of Devon Flora, The Building Stones of Devon and the poetry anthology Leaves.

ANNUAL MEETING: held over five days at a different town each year, this is the only occasion when the Association meets as a body. Articles for the next volume of Transactions are read and discussed, reports made and the locality explored.

TRANSACTIONS: since 1862 the Association has published an annual volume of Transactions. The collected volumes now contain some 2,000 articles and countless reports about Devon, making them the greatest single repository of information about the county and a source of inestimable value. Copies are sent all over the world.

DA NEWS: a lively newsletter sent to every member in Match and September. It keeps members in touch with current events and contains a diary listing of all activities planned for the forthcoming six months.

DAY SCHOOLS: the Association runs a series each year either on its own or in conjunction with Devon's universities. The Association arranges annual Schools Science Lectures.
