The book is of a category popularly called a 'Georgical'. Its author, William Marshall (1745-1818) was a leading writer on 18th century English agriculture and an early proponent of the establishment of a state-sponsored body to promote improved farming standards and agricultural colleges. In 1798 he finally completed an ambitious twelve-volume study of England's Rural Economy. He was also employed as a landscape gardener, writing three books on the subject.. When he died in 1818, Marshall was building an agricultural college at his home in Pickering, in Yorkshire. Today this building houses the Beck Isle Museum of Rural Life. This rare and much sought-after book was produced digitally from a copy in the Bodleian Library collection and can be downloaded from Google Books. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
