The Black Assizes in the West

Trans. Devon Assoc., vol. 16 (1884) pp. 595-604.

by

Frederick Willcocks

Prepared by Michael Steer

Dr Willcock's paper, presented at the Association's July 1884 Newton Abbot meeting focuses on reports of several fatal epidemics of typhus (or gaol fever), that occurred at the County Assizes during the 16th and 18th centuries. The horrific events that occurred in the Western Circuit (Exeter, Taunton and Launceston) were recorded by John Hooker, Chamberlain of Exeter, and Dr John Huxham FRS, a Plymouth physician. An outbreak at Exeter in 1586 was recorded in Holinshed's Chronicle (1587). Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by the Princeton University Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.
