"DOWN ST. MARY, a parish in the hundred of North Tawton, in the county of Devon, 5 miles N.W. of Crediton, 3 N.E. of Bow, its post town, and 1 mile from Morchard Road station. The inhabitants of the village, which is small, are employed in the weaving of serges by hand-looms, and in agriculture. The surface is hilly and sterile, except on the banks of the river Yeo. The living is a rectory* in the diocese of Exeter, value £233, in the patronage of B. Radford, Esq. The church, dedicated to St. Mary, is a stone structure, partly Norman, with some curious carved oak seats and ancient tiles. There is a National school for both sexes. H. C. Sturt, Esq., is lord of the manor and owner of most of the sail.
