This book is a well-written biography of one of Devon's most famous sons, Sir Walter Raleigh (1552-1618), who was born at the farmhouse of Hayes Barton near the head of Budleigh Salterton Bay, between Exmouth and Sidmouth. A useful summary of his life is presented at http://www.luminarium.org/renlit/raleghbio.htm. A print copy of Gosse's (1886) book is held at the University of Toronto Library and was produced from a digital copy that can be downloaded from http://archive.org/details/raleighg00gossuoft
