"EAST DOWN, a parish in the hundred of Braunton, in the county of Devon, 4 miles S.E. of Ilfracombe, and 62 1 N.E. of Barnstaple, its post town. It contains the hamlets of Churchill, Brockham, Clifton, Eastdown Mill, and Stonecombe. The living is a rectory* in the diocese of Exeter, value £346, in the patronage of C. Chichester, Esq. The church, dedicated to St. John the Baptist, is an ancient stone structure, with a square tower containing four bells. Sir John P. B. Chichester, Bart., is lord of the manor. The charities amount to £5. At a place called Northcote are several stones, supposed to be a Druidical monument.
