The History and Description, Ancient and Modern, of the City of Exeter

by

Thomas Brice

Exeter: Brice, 1802. illus. Part I, pp.1-216; Part II, pp. 1-32.

Index prepared by Michael Steer

Thomas Brice (1749-c1803) was the nephew of Andrew Brice, best known as Exeter's first newspaper man of significance, who in 1717 established the Exeter Post-master or the Loyal Mercury. Thomas Brice was also owner of the Exeter Flying Post, which in 1791 he sold to R & N Trewman. Brice is known to have printed The Maid's Lamentation and Rodney's Complete Victory over the French Fleet (Dominica) in 1782. Founded by the Romans circa 50 AD, Exetert is one of the oldest cities in England, once a powerhouse of wealth in the Middle Ages and the seventh largest city in 18th century England, it has been at the centre of some of the most influential events in British history, from the Norman Conquest, through the Reformation and the Civil War before being devastated by bombing in World War Two. This rare and much sought-after book was produced digitally from a copy held in the Harvard University Library collection that can be downloaded from http://books.google.co.uk/books, with a search by either author or title. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.

Part I. pp.1-216.
