John Cennick was an early Methodist preacher and hymn writer. The book begins as follows: "When I was at Plymouth, one of the Brethren who had been at Exeter, told us that the Society in Rock's-Lane, on Wednesday, May the 1st, had been sadly disturbed by some rude Persons, who threaten'd what they would do to me when I came back thither, etc. This Notice made me spread open before our Saviour all their Threatnings, being persuaded in my Heart that nevertheless I ought to go Exeter. On the Saturday following I went ... got to the Society-House in Waterbury-Lane, behind the Guildhall ..." and over the next few days there was rioting. Some of the chief rioters were arrested and bound over to the Quarter Sessions.
The names of Cennick's "brethren" are mostly spelled out in full. The names of the rioters have letters replaced by dashes (presumably for legal reasons) but are often recognizable despite that..
