EXMINSTER

"EXMINSTER, a parish in the hundred of Exminster, county Devon, 1 mile W. of Topsham, and 4 S.E. of Exeter, its post town and nearest railway station. It is situated on the river Exe, and is well adapted for agriculture and the breeding of cattle, which is here extensively carried on. The Devon County Lunatic Asylum is in this parish, and stands a short distance from the village. Archbishop Courtenay was born here in 1396. The Exeter canal passes through the parish. The living is a vicarage* in the diocese of Exeter, value £253. The church is an ancient stone edifice, with tower containing a (lock and six bells. It is dedicated to St. Martin. The parochial charities produce about £40 per annum, £15 of which are for education. The Wesleyans have a chapel, and there is a National school for both sexes. A fair is held on the 29th May for cattle."
