FARRINGDON

"FARINGDON, a parish in the hundred of East Budleigh, county Devon, 4 miles N.E. of Topsham, and 6 S.E. of Exeter. Honiton Clist is its post town. Its ancient name appears to have been Ferendon. Some of the inhabitants are employed in brick and tile making. The living is a rectory* in the diocese of Exeter, value £262, in the patronage of the bishop. The church is an ancient stone structure, containing some very antique church furniture, and several monuments. The parochial charities produce about £30 per annum. There is a National school for both sexes. John Garratt, Esq., is lord of the manor. In the neighbourhood are traces of a Roman camp. Faringdon House is the principal residence."
"CLIST SATCHFIELD, a tything in the parishes of Farringdon and Sowton, in the county of Devon, near Topsham. It was anciently possessed by the Sackvilles, and has ruins of a palace of the bishops of Exeter."
