GIDLEIGH

"GIDLEIGH, (or Gidley), a parish in the hundred of Wonford, county Devon, 6 miles N.W. of Moreton Hampstead, and 8 S.E. of Okehampton, its post town. It is situated within a short distance of Dartmoor, and the river Teign flows through the parish. In the will of Alfred this place is called Gee, and, subsequently belonged to the families of Gidley and Prouze. The village is small, and wholly agricultural. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Exeter, value £72. The church is a stone edifice dedicated to the Holy Trinity. The charities consist of £18 arising from rents, which are appropriated to the repairs of the church. There are ruins of a castle which stood here in the reign of Henry II. Gidley Park is the principal residence."
