HALBERTON

"HALBERTON, a parish and township in the hundred of Halberton, county Devon, 3 miles E. of Tiverton, and 1½ mile from the Tiverton Junction railway station. It is situated near the Grand Western canal, and contains several quarries of building stone. The soil is rich, and the subsoil clayey. The living is a vicarage* in the diocese of Exeter, value £659, in the patronage of the Dean and Chapter of Bristol. The church, dedicated to St. Andrew, is a fine edifice with square embattled tower, in which are six bells and a clock. It contains several monuments, and a carved oak screen. The Wesleyans have a chapel. The parochial charities produce £30 per annum. Earl Powlett is lord of the manor."
