"HARBERTON, a parish and township in the hundred of Coleridge, county Devon, 2½ miles S.W. of Totnes. The village is situated in a valley, and was anciently the seat of the Valletorts, who held the manor. The parish contains six hamlets, viz: Harbertonford, Belsford, Luscombe, East Leigh, West Leigh, and Englebourne. The soil is fertile, and generally light. There is a remarkable rock of trapstone, so hard as to resist the mason's chisel. At Harbertonford, on the banks of the river Harbourn, is an old woollen factory, partly occupied as a corn-mill; also the large edge-tool manufactory of Knapman & Son, called Hill Mills. The living is a vicarage* with the curacy of Halwell annexed, in the diocese of Exeter, value £580, in the patronage of the dean and chapter. The church is dedicated to St. Andrew, and has a lofty embattled tower containing six fine bells. The pulpit is stone, and carved with statues of the Apostles on its octagonal sides. The screen is in the same style of carving. In the chancel are three canopied stalls, with, a fine altar screen, and the font is Anglo-Norman. The parochial charities produce £65 per annum, of which about £40 goes to defray the poor rates: the remainder is the endowment of Wyse's almshouses for ten poor people. There are National schools at Harberton and Harbertonford. The manor is now held by the several freeholders."
