Great Rock: Devon's last metal mine

Tony Brooks

Cornish Hillside Publications (2004) [ISBN (Clothbound) 1 900147 335, (Paperback) 1 900147 327]

Index prepared by Michael Steer

The book recounts the story of Devon's last 'metal' mine at Great Rock, located in the woods outside Hennock. Its history stretches well back into the 19th century, but its main production occurred between 1900 and its closure in 1969. Much of the text results from taped interviews with former employees, many of whom have since passed away. Both Sydney Harbour Bridge and Brunel's famous Albert Bridge linking Devon and Cornwall were periodically rejuvenated with paint containing 'micacious haematite' from the mine at Great Rock.
