HORWOOD

[Description(s) from The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland (1868)]

"HORWOOD, a parish in the hundred of Fremington, county Devon, 3½ miles E. of Bideford, its post town and railway station, and 6 S.W. of Barnstaple. The village, which is small, is situated near the river Torridge, and on the old road leading from Bideford to Barnstaple. There are some very ancient farmhouses in the neighbourhood belonging to Thomas Howard Effingham Hogg, Esq. The living is a rectory* in the diocese of Exeter, value £157. The church is an ancient stone structure, dedicated to St. Michael. On the ledge of one- of the windows is a recumbent figure executed in alabaster."
