Nearby Places A parish in Roborough Hundred, the Archdeaconry of Totnes, and the Diocese of Exeter. Regarded as part of the Dartmoor area."MEAVY is a scattered village and parish, near the sources of the river Plym, and near Dartmoor Railway, from 6 to 7 miles S.E. of Tavistock. It comprises 361 souls, and 3351 acres of land, a large portion of which is on the uncultivated hills of Dartmoor, near Ringmoor Down, Brisworthy, and Loveton, the latter of which is a small village. Sir R. Lopes is lord of the manor and owner of a great part of the parish, but the manor of Good-a-Meavy belongs to E. Scobell, Esq., and those of Callisham and Durance belong to Sir T.T.F.E. Drake. It has its name from the small river Mew or Meavy, one of the sources of the Plym. The Church (St. Peter,) is an ancient structure, with a tower and six bells, and the living is a rectory, valued in K.B. at £13. 5s., and in 1831 at £238, in the patronage of the Lord Chancellor, and the incumbency of the Rev.
