"NEWTON TRACEY, a small parish, 5 miles E.N.E. of Bideford, has only 125 souls, and 340 acres of land, belonging to the Trustees of the late T. Hogg, Esq., and a few smaller owners. The Church (St. Thomas-a-Becket) is a small Gothic structure, and the benefice is a rectory, valued in K.B. at £5. 8s. 11½d., and in 1831 at £69. The Lord Chancellor is the patron, and the Rev. John Dene, of Horwood, is the incumbent, and has 38A. 3R. 10P. of glebe. The tithes were commuted in 1848, for £50 per annum. " [From White's Devonshire Directory (1850)]
