"OTTERTON, a long village, on the eastern bank of the river Otter, within a mile of the sea, and 11 miles S.E. by E. of Exeter, has in its parish 1245 souls, and 3500 acres of land, extending southward to the mouth of the Otter, and including the small hamlets of Northmost-town, Pitson, Passford, and Pinn. Many of the female inhabitants are employed in making Honiton lace; and two fairs are held here on the Wednesday in Easter week, and the Wednesday after October 10. King John founded here a Priory of four monks, and endowed it with the manors of Otterton, Sidmouth, and East Budleigh . . . The Trustees of the late Lord Rolle are now lords of the manor of Otterton, owners of most of the parish, impropriators of the great tithes, and patrons of the vicarage, valued in K.B. at £22, and in 1831 at £314. The Ven. J.M. Stephens, M.A. is the vicar, and has a good residence, and 28A. of glebe. . . . The Church (St. Michael,) is an ancient cruciform structure, with a tower and five bells. The transept was rebuilt by the late Lord Rolle, about ten years ago. There was anciently a chapel at a place called Hederland. . . . " [From White's Devonshire Directory (1850)]
