Nearby Places A parish in Hayridge Hundred, the Archdeaconry and the Diocese of Exeter."PLYMTREE is a pleasant village, near a tributary stream of the river Culm, 4 miles S.S.E. of Collumpton. It gives name to a Deanery, and its parish contains 439 souls, and 2185 acres of land, generally fertile, and boldly undulated. The manor was anciently held of the Honour of Plympton, by the Fitzpaine, Courtenay, and other families, and was dismembered by the heiress of Thomas Godwyn. The soil now belongs to Wm. Blake, Esq., Charles Harward, Esq., owner of Hayne House; Sir J. Kennaway, owner of Clist-William; A. Philpott, Esq., owner of Fordmore; J.F. Pierce, Esq., and a few smaller freeholders. The Church (Virgin Mary,) is a handsome Gothic structure, with a tower and five bells. An elegant screen, painted and gilt, separates the nave and chancel, and on the west side of the tower is a representation of the Virgin and Child. The rectory, valued in K.B. at £21. 18s. 1½d., and in 1831 at £285, is in the patronage of Oriel College, Oxford, and incumbency of the Rev. Joseph Dornford, M.A., who has an old residence and 43A. of glebe. . . . " [From White's Devonshire Directory (1850)]
