ROBOROUGH

"ROBOROUGH, a parish in the hundred of Fremington, county Devon, 5 miles E. of Great Torrington, its post town, and 4 from the Portsmouth Arms station on the North Devon railway. The village, which is of small extent, is wholly agricultural. It belongs partly to Vivian of Pencalenick. The soil is of a clayey nature, and the land generally of an inferior quality. The surface lies high, and is consequently exposed to easterly winds. The greater part of the land is arable, and the remainder meadow, pasture, and woodland. The living is a rectory* in the diocese of Exeter, value £193. The church, dedicated to St. Peter, is of the 15th century, containing six bells. The parochial charities produce about £3 per annum. There is a parochial school for both sexes. Ebberley House, which is the principal residence, is a modern mansion. C. Hole, Esq., is lord of the manor."
