ST. NICHOLAS

"ST. NICHOLAS, a parish in the hundred of Wonford, county Devon, 5 miles E. of Newton-Bushell. It is situated on the river Teign, opposite Teignmouth, its post town, and with which it communicates by a bridge. It comprises the village of Shaldon, and the greater part of the hamlet of Ringmore. The living is a discharged vicarage in the diocese of Exeter, value £125. The church is dedicated to St. Nicholas. There are National and other schools.

"SHALDON, a hamlet in the parish of St. Nicholas, hundred of Wanford, county Devon, 5 miles E. of Newton-Abbot. It is situated on the S. bank of the river Teign, across which a bridge has been constructed, and nearly opposite Teignmouth, to which there is a ferry. It is much resorted to for sea bathing. In the 17th century a church was erected by the Carews of Haccombe, and there are places of worship for Independents, Wesleyans, and Baptists. The land is protected from the encroachment of the sea by an embankment."
