General information
A parish in East Budleigh Hundred, under the Peculiar jurisdiction of the Dean and Chapter of Exeter. Sidford is a modern chapel of ease (1865)."SIDBURY, an ancient compact village, in the picturesque valley of the river Sid, three miles N.N.E. of Sidmouth, is sheltered on either side by verdant hills, . . . The parish of Sidbury comprises 8220 acres of land, and had 1772 inhabitants in 1841, but has now about 2000. It includes the long village of SIDFORD,. halfway between Sidbury and Sidmouth, where there is a good bridge, on the Exeter and Lyme Regis road. It rises in bold hills on both sides of the valley, and comprises many scattered farm-houses, and several handsome villas, with tasteful grounds, commanding pleasing views. . . . Court Hall, the manor house, is the seat and property of Henry Hunt, Esq., and he and his family own Woodhouse, Wooton, Sidbury House, Plyford, and other estates in this large parish. The manor of Stone and Sidford was anciently held by the Pym, Periam, Pole and Bartlett families. . . . The Church (St. Giles,) is a fine structure, of Norman and perpendicular architecture, which has undergone many repairs and alterations. . . . The parish is in the peculiar jurisdiction of the Dean and Chapter of Exeter, who are also appropriators of the great tithes, and patrons of the vicarage, valued in K.B. at £28, and in 1831 at £576. The Rev. Hy. Fellowes, M.A. is the incumbent, and has six acres of glebe, and a neat residence, built in 1814, at a cost of £1200. . . . " [From White's Devonshire Directory (1850)]
