Tractarian and Editor of the Christian Monitor, Rev. William Goode, M.A., F.S.A, was rector of All Hallows, the Great and the Less, in London, a church demolished in the 1890s. The publication records a phase during a stormy debate known as the Gorham Case, between the Evangelicals and Tractarians in the early days of the Oxford Anglican Movement. The root of the bitter and at times acrimonious dispute seems to have been the issue of baptismal regeneration - the notion that the Divine Life in the Soul takes place whenever the sacrament is properly administered. The Evangelical clergy of the Exeter diocese, led by John Hatchard, Vicar of St Andrew's, Plymouth, and son of John Hatchard the publisher, openly challenging Bishop Phillpotts over the orthodoxy of his domestic chaplain, William Maskell. This rare and much sought-after book was produced digitally from a copy in the Harvard University Library collection and can be downloaded from Google Books.
