WALKHAMPTON

"WALKHAMPTON, a parish in the hundred of Roborough, county Devon, 5 miles S.E. of Tavistock, its post town, and 10 N. of Plymouth. The village is situated in the valley of the Walkham rivulet, near the border of Dartmoor Forest. In the vicinity are a copper mine and some extensive granite quarries. The parish includes part of the hamlet of Little Horrabridge. The soil is varied. The Plymouth railway passes through the parish. The living is a vicarage* in the diocese of Exeter, value £125. The church stands upon an eminence on the verge of Dartmoor Forest. The parochial charities produce about £15 per annum. There is a free school, founded in 1719 by Mrs. Woodford. The Wesleyans have a chapel. A fair is held occasionally."
