"WASHFORD PYNE is a small parish and scattered village, 9 miles north from Crediton station and 7 north-east from Morchard Road station on the North Devon branch of the London and South Western railway, in the Northern division of the county, hundred of Witheridge, Crediton petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of West Tiverton, and archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. Peter is an edifice of stone in the Decorated style. . . . the carved oak lectern was executed and presented by Mrs. Jenkins, sister of the patron: there are 75 sittings. The register of baptisms and burials dates from the year 1587; marriages, 1746. . . . At Wonham are some ancient remains, possibly monastic, and including a window built into a shed in a farm-yard. . . The chief crops are wheat and oats and some pasture land. The acreage is 1,144; rateable value £712; the population in 1891 was 141." [From: Kelly's Directory of Devonshire, 1902]
