"YARCOMBE, a parish in the hundred of Axminster, county Devon, 8 miles N.W. of Axminster, and 5½ W. of Chard. The village is intersected by the road from London to Exeter, and has water communication by means of the Taunton and Chard canal. A moiety of the manor was given by Queen Elizabeth to Sir Francis Drake, in whose family the property still continues. The living is a vicarage* in the diocese of Exeter, value £490, in the patronage of the crown. The church, dedicated to St. John the Baptist, has several painted windows and an old font. The register dates from the middle of the 16th century. The Baptists have a chapel. There are National and Sunday schools. The charities produce about £36 per annum. A pleasure fair used to be held on the second Tuesday after Trinity Sunday."
